Hearing impairment impacts all areas of our life. Like vision, we rely very heavily
on our hearing to help us interpret our surroundings and react to the environment
around us. When we start to have hearing loss, it can easily affect one’s social
and day-to-day life in negative ways. People with hearing impairment:
- Must use extra energy to communicate.
- Often avoid social situations where background noise is high
- May feel more stressed or emotional.
- Frequently feel less independent.
- Worry about safety at home and around town.
- Report being less satisfied with their life than those without hearing impairment.
- State that they are not as content with their life in retirement.
- Have difficulties performing routine tasks like driving or watching TV
Studies show that adults with hearing loss who wear hearing aids report less sadness
and depression as well as better relationships with family and friends compared
to adults with hearing loss who did not seek help. Although there is not yet a cure
for hearing loss, there are certainly things that can help improve the quality of
life for people with hearing loss and their families.
